Carpenters Training

Carpenters Education Center

The Mainland Nova Scotia Joint Training Committee (JTC) is committed to continuously training members of United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners, Locals 83 and 1392. The JTC consists of four Trustees; two management and two union representatives, as well as a full-time Training Co-ordinator.

This page outlines courses that are provided, free of charge to Union Members. As well as these courses, members are encouraged to take advantage of carpentry related training provided by Community Colleges, Technical institutes and Private Training providers. The JTC also works together with the Department of Education to provide apprenticeship training, and encourages members to write the Inter Provincial Carpentry Exam and become a Certified Carpenter.

Apprenticeship Training

The Training Fund of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners also works with the Department of Education to provide apprenticeship training.

By being indentured to the Union, you will receive the necessary on-the-job training throughout your apprenticeship. This on-the-job training allows you to earn while you learn, with a short technical component offered yearly at the NSCC. Some costs associated with attending this technical training, are covered by our Training Fund.

At the end of the apprenticeship program, members are encouraged to write the Inter Provincial Carpentry Exam and become a Certified Carpenter.

  • Section 7.03: "Preferences of employment shall be granted to all indentured apprentices in order to provide a reasonable opportunity for those indentured to complete their apprenticeship."
  • Section 7.04a: "Preferences of employment shall be granted to all indentured apprentices in order to provide a reasonable opportunity for those indentured to complete their apprenticeship."
