Introduction

The Mainland Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island Joint Training Committee (JTC) is committed to continuously training members of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners (UBCJ), Locals 83, 1338, and 1392. The JTC consists of six trustees - three management and three union representatives, as well as a full-time Training Coordinator. Funding for the JTC is secured through the collective bargaining process and provides union members with the opportunity to access a variety of training courses free of charge.

If you have questions regarding your training needs or to request a course, please contact Ron MacDonald, Training Coordinator at 902.454.5100 ext. 26.

Apprenticeship

The Training Fund of the UBCJ also works with the Department of Labour and Advanced Education to provide apprenticeship training.

When indentured to the Union, you will receive the necessary on-the-job training throughout your apprenticeship. This on-the-job training allows you to earn while you learn, with a short technical component offered yearly at the Nova Scotia Community College (NSCC). Some of the costs associated with attending this technical training are also covered by our Training Fund.

At the end of the apprenticeship program, members are encouraged to write the Interprovincial Carpentry Exam and become a Red Seal Carpenter.
